Both the limited liability company (LLC) and the professional limited liability company (PLLC) are business structures that can provide tax advantages and protect business owners from personal liability for business claims or debts. The LLC can be formed with nearly any business while the PLLC is formed only when the owner plans to provide specific professional services like physician, lawyer, accountant, or chiropractor services, for example. The processes for setting up LLCs and PLLSs are similar except for the following. The application for PLLC status requires initial formal approval from the medical, legal, accounting, or other appropriate licensing body whereas the LLC typically only requires approval from the Secretary of State's office in one's state of residence. Setting up an LLC or a PLLC takes careful planning and requires certain steps.
